The owners of 50 acres on the village’s north end that are being sought for a wetland system have until June 4 to respond to condemnation proceedings initiated by the Will County Forest Preserve District.

The property is part of a 70-acre parcel owned by Thomas V. Powell Sr. Trust No. 2202. Timothy Good, Forest Preserve District planning program manager, said the district turned to condemnation proceedings when the property owners failed to respond to the district’s initial offer. The property has been appraised at $400,000, Good said.

The 50-acre parcel is less than a mile northwest of Western Avenue and University Parkway. It is directly south and southeast of Illinois Department of Natural Resources land managed by Forest Preserve District staff.

Acquiring the property would enable the Forest Preserve District to complete the wetland system under its management, Good said.

The district initiated condemnation proceedings April 23. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources agreed to reimburse the district up to $200,000 of the purchase, Good said.
