Provena St. Joseph Medical Center has agreed to meet the first-aid needs of the drivers and fans at drag races beginning this month at the newly constructed Route 66 Raceway in Joliet Township.

Under an exclusive agreement signed Monday, the Joliet-based medical center will offer health service on the raceway’s premises, including medical care for injured race drivers and first-aid and treatment of sun stroke, heat exhaustion and other ailments typically associated with large outdoor stadium events.

Working with Joliet-area paramedics, the medical center will staff two first-aid stations at the track with registered nurses trained in emergency care and advanced life support. An aeromedical ambulance and critical-care ground ambulances will be on standby at major events to transport trauma cases to St. Joseph’s.
