The Maine Township High School District 207 school board late Monday night voted 5-2 to continue requiring students to wear ID badges, despite objections from two board members and a number of students.

Board President Roger Crawford, who had originally supported the policy, voted against it, along with board member Oscar Marquis.

Since last fall, the district has required that students and staffers wear the badges on school grounds.

A number of students and staffers at Maine South High School in Park Ridge and Maine West High School in Des Plaines have objected to the policy.

They say the badges have caused divisiveness between students and staff and detracted from schoolwork. Students who forget their badges must pay for new ones.

The board did agree to lower to cost of replacement badges to $3 from $5.

“If we believe there is a security issue in our schools we should implement a policy that addresses the problem,” Marquis said.
