Top seed Pete Sampras gutted out a 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) victory over second seed Jason Stoltenberg to win the $315,000 AT&T Challenge in Duluth, Ga.
Sunday’s victory was just the third title on clay for Sampras, who has 54 career victories.
Sampras won his second title this year; he also won on indoor hard courts in Philadelphia.
– Andre Agassi’s surge back toward the top of the rankings was slowed when he was beaten on clay in three sets by Thomas Enqvist in the BMW Open final in Munich.
Enqvist, also on a comeback after a series of injuries, won 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.
– Martina Hingis defeated Jana Novotna 6-3, 7-5 to capture the German Grand Prix in Hamburg for her first clay-court title in Europe.
Last year, Iva Majoli won this tournament and downed Hingis in the French Open final.
