A DuPage County Board committee has voted to recommend approval of a rezoning request sought by a steel fabricating and crane business in an unincorporated area near Bloomingdale.

The owner of Crane & Steel Inc. is seeking to rezone a portion of his property to allow the company to expand its business, despite concerns from nearby residents.

The company has been operating on about a third of its site, off Rosedale Avenue north of Lake Street, for more than two decades. The remaining two-thirds of the property is zoned for residential use.

Nearby homeowners have fought the proposed rezoning, fearful they would lose a buffer between their residences to the east and industrial-type activities on the west end of the property. They also contend their opinions have not been given much weight during the rezoning process.

“I don’t understand why no one is listening to us,” said Karen Barnes, whose property borders the site, during a meeting of the board’s County Development Committee.

Dalip Bammi, director of development for the county, said that Crane & Steel has agreed to donate a 60-foot strip of land along the east edge of the property as a conservation easement, to build an eight-foot fence and to plant additional trees. The county board must still act on the request.
