A weekend raid of an Antioch apartment led to the arrest of a father and son, both of whom were charged with running an illegal sports betting ring, authorities said Tuesday.

Fred Vermeyen, 54, of 295 Joanna Ct., Antioch, and his son, Lane Vermeyen, 32, of 25091 W. North Circle Drive, also in Antioch, were both charged with syndicate gambling, said Sgt. Lou Kadlec of the Lake County sheriff’s office.

Kadlec said the Vermeyens were arrested after a Friday night search at an apartment at 289 Joanna Ct. by Lake and Cook County sheriff’s officers. He said authorities confiscated betting sheets and records that indicated the suspects had handled at least $60,000 in wagers on recent basketball and baseball games.

Police also seized a computer and several cell phones allegedly used in the betting operation, he said.

Kadlec said the Vermeyens were present at the time of the police search, although neither lives in the apartment where the search took place. He said police are trying to determine who lives in that apartment.

The Vermeyens each are free on $30,000 bonds pending a May 5 court hearing.
