The driver of the car that struck and killed a 12-year-old boy who ran in front of oncoming traffic near his home in Lake Bluff will not be charged, police said Tuesday.

William Uhlig, a 6th grader at Lake Bluff Middle School, was killed Monday after he ran in front of a car traveling on Rockland Road, police said.

The boy was seen walking from his mother’s driveway along Rockland Road at about 8 a.m. when he started to run across the street. Police said the boy cut through stopped vehicles in the westbound lane before running into the eastbound lane, where he was struck by a Chevrolet Caprice traveling about 40 miles per hour.

The driver, Giovanni Guigli of 1574 Old Deerfield Rd. in Highland Park, was not speeding and will not be charged as a result of the accident, said Lake Bluff Police Chief Fred Day.

The boy was taken to Lake Forest Hospital and later flown to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead at 1:30 p.m. Monday, authorities said

The boy is survived by his parents, Sharon Uhlig of Lake Bluff, and William Uhlig of Knollwood.
