Loop workers can cut their commuting time to just a few minutes–if they move into the City Center Club.

Two former office towers at 212 W. Washington St. are being converted into 367 condominium units.

Priced from $104,900 to $339,900, they are available in 13 floor plans offering from 490 to 1,540 square feet, with one to three bedrooms.

The residential conversion of the adjoining buildings–one built in 1910 and the other in 1912–is a project of Calvin Boender and Robert Finnigan, partners in Elmhurst-based Historic Homes Ltd.

The brick-and-steel buildings were first occupied by the Chicago Telephone Co., then later by Illinois Bell and Ameritech.

The conversion plan by Hartshorne & Plunkard Ltd., Chicago architects, calls for retail space on the first floor, resident/public parking on levels 2 through 6 and condo residences on floors 7 to 20.

Standard features will include balconies, gas log fireplaces, hardwood floors, 10 1/2-foot ceilings and 24-hour entry security.

Three decorated models can be viewed on the 18th floor. The street-level sales center is on Washington Street.

First occupancies are scheduled for March, 1999.

The on-site parking costs $20,000 per space.

In addition, a separate six-level public garage will be built adjoining the condominiums. A park atop the garage will be for residents.

Located in the heart of the central business district, the City Center Club is within a short walk of the Civic Opera House, the Daley Center and the Metra rail stations.
