Tinley Park plan commissioners Thursday night opted for grease and car grilles rather than greasy cooking grills at the entrance to the downtown district.

The commissioners voted to recommend that the Village Board issue a special-use permit and variances for two businessmen to put up an oil-changing facility at 16701 S. Oak Park Ave.

If given final approval, the action would mean that the hot dog stand Just Joe’s, which has operated for nearly 30 decades, is history.

William Filipski, owner of Just Joe’s, had protested the plan at an earlier meeting, accusing developers Allan Sexton and John Sarros and village officials of taking away his livelihood. He also presented petitions that he said contained more than 1,000 signatures of people wanting to keep the fast-food place, which is housed in a trailer.

Sexton, who with Sarros is under contract to buy the property, said previously they studied the possibility of keeping Just Joe’s, which has a monthly lease arrangement with the current owner but said that the small size of the lot prevented it.
