The county-owned recycling center in Carol Stream would be renovated at a cost of $822,000 under a contract that won preliminary approval Wednesday from members of the DuPage Solid Waste Committee.

The project would add new doors, extra conveyor equipment and other improvements to the county’s Intermediate Processing Facility, according to Kevin Dixon, director of solid waste for DuPage.
The Solid Waste Committee recommended that a contract for the work be awarded to P.B. Verdico Inc., a Wood Dale construction firm. The contract needs approval from the full County Board.
If approved, Dixon said work would begin in June. The project is expected to be completed in the fall. The center is likely to be shut down for about two weeks during renovation, Dixon said.
Money for the project comes from the county’s solid-waste fund, which is supported by revenues from a surcharge on garbage dumped over the years at DuPage landfills.
According to a 1996 report, the recycling center has processed more than 197,600 tons of materials since opening in 1991.
