Police said Tuesday they were looking for leads after tools worth nearly $2,400 were reported stolen from a home being built in Wheeling by Township High School District 214 students.

Students told a faculty supervisor they discovered a basement window broken and tools missing after they reported to the home in the 1100 block of South Elmhurst Road at about 6 a.m. Monday, police said.

Items reported missing included an air compressor, four saws, two nail guns, three drills, a sander and a staple gun, authorities said. They said student workers had last been inside the house Friday.

Students participating in the vocational project are enrolled in any of six district schools and obtain academic credit while building the homes, which are eventually sold, officials said.
