Residents will have several opportunities to safely–and legally– dispose of used motor oil during Kane County’s annual series of collection days.

The first pickup is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 25 at the Aurora Street Department, 720 N. Broadway.

The oil recycling program is sponsored by the Kane County Department of Environmental Management, the Kane-DuPage Soil & Water Conservation District and the Kane County Farm Bureau. Last year, about 2,000 people deposited about 25,000 gallons of used oil to be recycled, said Gary Mielke, county recycling coordinator.

About 600 million gallons of used oil are generated each year in the United States, and officials estimate 140 million gallons are disposed of improperly, much of the oil illegally ending up in landfills.

Drained oil filters will be accepted, as will empty containers for disposal, all at no charge, Mielke said.
