IRISH SHORT STORIES
Selected by Colm Toibin, Penguin Audiobooks, 6 hours, $23.95. Read by Kate Binchy, Aidan Gillen, et al.
In Mary Beckett’s trenchant story “A Belfast Woman,” a Catholic mother in Northern Ireland surveys her embattled landscape and frightened family and longs for the time “before the Troubles.” Other stories in this commanding anthology include Frank O’Connor’s “Guests of the Nation” and William Trevor’s “Kathleen’s Field.”
