A Cook County judge was stabbed and seriously injured in an apparent robbery attempt Friday morning as the 47-year-old jurist walked near his Logan Square home while en route to his courtroom.
Police said Judge David Delgado was stabbed several times in the back by an assailant in the 3100 block of West Schubert Avenue. A woman, who was driving her car on Schubert and witnessed the attack, repeatedly honked until the man broke off the attack and ran down a nearby alley, said Area 5 Violent Crimes Sgt. Tom Keough.
Luis Valle, a friend of Delgado’s, said he was walking his dog when he saw the woman frantically dialing 911 on her cell phone and then found Delgado lying face down on the street.
“I bent down and he said, `Luis, take my briefcase to my wife,’ ” said Valle, 60, who then ran half a block north to Delgado’s home to notify Delgado’s wife about what had happened. “. . . when we got back, David was being placed in the ambulance. He looked much worse.”
Delgado, who was elected as a Circuit Court judge in 1992 and has worked in the domestic relations division since September 1993, was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center. He was listed in serious condition though he was awake Friday afternoon, said hospital spokeswoman, Melinda Hartz.
Police, meanwhile, sought a suspect in the attack. Although it was not clear if anything was taken, police said robbery–not Delgado’s work in divorce court–was the probable motive.
Keough said there was no indication the suspect was connected to a boarded-up apartment building at 2701 N. Kedzie Ave., near the site of the attack, that has attracted drug and gang activity as well as squatters.
