Officials this week gave preliminary approval to a $15.8 million budget proposal that includes a minuscule increase in property taxes.
Major expenditures in the proposed budget, which would be 8.1 percent higher than last year’s, include flood prevention, maintenance and beautification of public rights of way and expansion of parking for businesses along Oak Park Avenue in the historic area, said Trustee Pat Rea.
“We have defined the problems for the 21st Century,” he said. “This budget reflects the cost of addressing those problems.”
Under the proposed budget, which must be approved by April 30, property taxes would rise to $1.11 per $100 of equalized assessed valuation from $1.09.
The owner of a $190,000 home would see an annual increase of $10 on the village portion of his or her property tax, Village Manager Dave Dorgan said.
Officials have allocated $600,000 for flood relief, Rea said.
The village also expects to spend more than $500,000 during the next 10 years for maintenance and beautification, with $100,000 allocated in this budget.
Tinley Park also intends to begin taking public easements on property behind Oak Park Avenue businesses to provide more off-street parking in that area, he said, noting 150 more spaces are needed during the day due to lunchtime crowds at restaurants.
