Two men who grew up in Romeoville were honored by the Village Board this week as police officer of the year and firefighter of the year.

The awards, given for the first time, represent “an opportunity to acknowledge public safety employees,” Police Chief Andrew Barto said. “The safety of the streets is being paid for with the blood of police officers and firefighters.

Police Officer Ken Kroll was singled out after he recently developed information that led to a major drug arrest, Barto said.

“He challenges us. He sets high goals for himself,” the chief said.

Fire Chief Carl Churulo said firefighter John Hardy stands out because of “his constant wanting to do more for the department.”
