“Rapunzel” at the Marriot Lincolnshire Theatre: The Grimm Brothers’ tale of “Rapunzel” is a dark, dramatic story, but you wouldn’t know it from the production being presented by Marriott’s Lincolnshire Theatre for Young Audiences, which bubbles with good cheer. With lots of songs and plenty of vivacious dance numbers accompanied by live music, fairy-tale costumes and comedy galore, it depicts the story of Rapunzel, who is locked in a tower by the wicked witch and longs for freedom. This traditional wish seems foiled because the prince who might help her escape is afraid of heights and proclaims that he is not a hero but a zero. Thus the plucky Rapunzel, a heroine for the ’90s, takes charge of her own escape. The plot meanders for a while towards the end in search of the happy conclusion, but director Elizabeth Lucas keeps the rollicking fun and games and wham-bang special effects coming pell mell. The play continues through May 16 at the Marriott’s Lincolnshire Theatre, Milwaukee Ave. south of Half Day Rd., Lincolnshire. 847-634-0200.
