Des Plaines aldermen have voted 7-1 to allow Des Plaines’ 13 commissions to elect their own chairmen, taking the privilege away from the mayor.
The Des Plaines mayor had been charged with appointing eight of the 13 chairs, but neither Mayor Paul Jung nor his two predecessors have exercised the privilege, officials said.

The issue arose when members of the Des Plaines Cable TV Commission requested, in a letter to Jung, the legal right to elect their own chairman.
In other action Monday, aldermen voted unanimously to deny a request by CoVest Banc to install automatic teller machines inside the Des Plaines Police Department headquarters and at the downtown Metra station.
City Manager Wally Douthwaite said the city would not get much money from the deal.
