Using one technology to raise money for another, the parent-teacher group at Gemini Junior High is selling cut-rate phone cards to help buy new computers for the Niles-based school.

East Maine District 63, which oversees Gemini, is considering installing a number of new computers in classrooms throughout the district next year. The money raised by Gemini’s parent-teacher group will be used to improve that school’s outdated computer lab.

The group had originally set a March 16 deadline to sign up people for the EconCard, a product of New York-based Econophone Inc. that puts a flat rate of 12 cents a minute for calls anywhere in the U.S. and also offers discounts on international calls.

But the deadline was too close to spring break, so the group decided to extend it until April 20. Applications will be mailed to school parents this Friday.
