Steger trustees tabled formal consideration Monday of bids submitted by four private firms hoping to provide paramedic services to the village and scheduled a special meeting to discuss the bids on April 9.

The bids ranged from New Lenox-based Kurtz Ambulance Service’s $109,426 to Matteson-based D&V Management Service’s $140,589.

Village officials are considering restructuring Steger’s paramedic service. Currently nine paramedics and 12 emergency medical technicians–all volunteers–respond to ambulance calls in Steger. Paramedics and EMTs remain available to cover specific time periods on specific days. They are paid only when they respond to a call.

Private paramedic services already are used by South Chicago Heights and other neighboring villages. Volunteers typically augment such services.
