Vernon Hills police will be escorting shoppers Friday as part of its community policing program at Hawthorn Shopping Center.

Between 6 and 9 p.m., officers will be at the main entrance to the mall to offer assistance and to accompany shoppers to their vehicles. The program targets senior citizens and women, but anyone seeking help will be accommodated.

Officers also will distribute safety pamphlets. Members of the police Explorer Scout Post will be helping the officers.

“This endeavor is not the result of any particular incident or problem at the mall,” said Vernon Hills Police Chief Gary Kupsak. “Rather, it is another way that can remove any barriers that may exist between police and citizens.”

Hawthorn Shopping Center is at the intersection of Illinois Highways 60 and 21.
