Feeling the pain: Teenagers across the southwest suburbs got a mild dose of starvation recently when they participated in World Vision’s recent 30-hour famine, a fundraiser to help the world’s hungry.

Two dozen teenagers from St. Julie Billiart Catholic Church in Tinley Park gathered at 11:30 a.m. on a Saturday for a big lunch. Then from noon that day until 6 p.m. Sunday they and a dozen other teenagers who gathered at St. George Church in Tinley Park got their only nourishment from fruit juices donated by local businesses.

They passed the time doing good deeds, including painting, cleaning and stocking shelves at the Daybreak Shelter in Joliet and helping the elderly with household chores and yard work. The rest of the time was spent playing games, watching movies, participating in gym activities and sleeping.

“I wasn’t actually hungry,” said John DeFrank, 14, of Orland Park, who participated through his youth group at St. Elizabeth Seton Church. “They kept us so involved that I didn’t think about being hungry.”
