A new angle: If you find a “gone fishing” sign on the door of Mokena Junior High School, it’s for real.
The school is forming an anglers club for its 6th, 7th and 8th graders.
Principal Gary Bradbury proposed the idea in February, and the District 159 School Board approved it in March after learning that at least 63 students had expressed an interest.
The idea, Bradbury said, is to lure more students to participate in after-school activities. And the club is reeling them in.
Parents have offered to help too, he said.
“The encouraging insight has been the fact that (students interested in joining a fishing club) have not been involved in the other extracurricular activities that we offer,” Bradbury said.
“Are we to surmise, then, that you’re hooked on this?” asked Supt. Roger Reardon.
Board member Pam Schonwise quickly moved to approve the formation of the Meteor Anglers Club before any more puns could escape.
