In a party squabble that may have left a few bruises, state Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale) was elected chairman Tuesday night of the Downers Grove Township Republican organization.
Dillard, 42, defeated Joseph Mathy, who had sought re-election to a two-year term.
Dillard said he told committeemen that his “personality and experience and state Senate office gave us the best hope to unify all of the Republicans in Downers Grove Township.”
Before the meeting, the Mathy camp had accused Dillard’s supporters of dirty politics, contending some were spreading misinformation.
Republican organizations are meeting throughout DuPage this week to select township chairmen in advance of a party convention scheduled for Monday evening.
On Monday, County Board member Patrick O’Shea (R-Lombard), who had waged an unsuccessful campaign for the GOP nomination for board chairman, also was defeated in his bid for a second term as chairman of the York Township Republican organization. The new GOP chairman in York is Paul Hinds, a Villa Park resident and tax revenue specialist in the county clerk’s office.
