A Tinley Park civic leader was named to his first political office by Mayor Edward Zabrocki late Tuesday afternoon.
Zabrocki said Matthew Heffernan, a 17-year resident, agreed Monday to replace Thomas DeBernardo, who resigned from the Tinley Park Village Board to take a job in Florida.
The mayor said Heffernan’s record of community involvement made him a good prospect.
Heffernan, 52, and his wife, Genevieve Heffernan, have two children, Lisa, 22, and Matthew, 14.
Heffernan, a Marine Corps veteran, is a district sales manager for an Elmhurst-based roofing company and a eucharistic minister at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Orland Hills.
He is vice president of the Tinley Park Oktoberfest and chairman of the Tinley Park Oktoberfest Parade. He has served on the Tinley Park Commemorative Community Commission and is co-chairman of the Tinley Park Veterans Commission.
“Matt is a very dependable guy,” Zabrocki said.
