A 45-year-old woman was in police custody late Wednesday after her car allegedly struck and killed a 37-year-old Steger man as he tried to cross Steger Road in unincorporated Crete Township, police said.

Michael E. Rendant was hit about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday while walking home from work when he attempted to cross Steger Road about 200 feet east of Richton Road, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Police.

Sharon E. Veronesi of Steger was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, according to police officials. Veronesi was driving a 1988 Ford Tempo east on Steger Road when the accident occurred, police said.

Rendant was pronounced dead at Columbia Olympia Fields Osteopathic Hospital in Olympia Fields, a hospital spokesman said. The accident remained under investigation by the Will County Sheriff’s Police.
