Kane County was one of the first counties in the state to venture into cyberspace when it began posting election results on its Internet site in 1996.

But gremlins plagued county Web watchers Tuesday with a variety of woes. According to data processing director Bob Carlson, a bug cropped up between Netscape and Kane’s Web site that did not allow users of that browser to view state and county races.

Kane also lost its connection to the Internet for about 20 minutes, but the system came back up before data could be loaded into a backup site.

To make the evening complete, before returns were final, Kane inexplicably lost access to its Internet provider and could not load additional results into its Web page for a time.

Carlson said that although the problems were vexing, none of them affected the pace of tallying and distributing vote totals at the Government Center in Geneva.
