In a surprise decision, Iroquois Community School Principal Thomas Ray has decided to resign his post and return to teaching in the fall.

Ray’s decision, which he announced to the school faculty Tuesday morning, comes just nine months after Des Plaines District 62 converted Iroquois Junior High into a year-round program for kindergarten through 8th grade.

Ray could not be reached for comment Tuesday, but according to district officials, the enormous time and difficulty in getting the year-round school off the ground took a heavy toll on Ray.

Iroquois opened in July after more than a year of intense debate in which critics blasted administrators for ignoring concerns about the changeover. The issue figured largely in last November’s board elections, which saw three anti-administration candidates win office to create a 4-3 split on the board.

Ray is expected to return to Iroquois in the fall, possibly as a math and science instructor.

District officials are to meet Wednesday to begin the process of selecting a replacement, according to Deputy Supt. Ray Gunn.
