The Village of Steger now will charge $50 to inspect previously inhabited apartments and single-family homes before they can be reoccupied.

Village trustees this week settled on the new fee. The village previously charged $12 for a rudimentary inspection intended to ensure that dwellings contained water heaters, furnaces, sinks and other necessities.

Trustees also unanimously approved expanding the inspection to ensure the dwellings have heat, hot water and running water.

Trustee Anthony Santori acknowledged that $50 per inspection is more than four times the previous fee but said it is comparable to fees charged in other municipalities.

“I’m not looking to soak anybody,” he said, noting it was Steger’s first inspection-fee increase in more than a decade.
