Des Plaines aldermen voted 8-0 Monday night to continue to fund an after-school program for middle school students at a cost of about $15,000 a year.
However, the council made no move to replace program coordinator Val Hoffman, who was fired after less than a year in the job.
Arlene Merriman, the city’s human resources and services director, told aldermen she would return to the City Council soon with a recommendation on whether a new paid coordinator should be hired.
“We just wanted to verify the continued commitment of the City Council to this program tonight,” Merriman said.
The city on April 1 hired Hoffman as a part-time employee to administer its after-school teen center program. Hoffman worked until going on leave in last November.
City officials assumed she would return to full duties on Jan. 5, Merriman said. When she did not return, she was terminated.
