Ya No Soy El Nino Aquel (Sony/Tropical) (star) (star) (star)
“Ya No Soy El Nino Aquel” is smarter than it looks, what with a highly stylized Jerry Rivera languidly laying all over a blue satin chair. There’s no such glamor inside, and the target of the crossover attempt is more Latino tastes that may have gotten used to bright pop productions than American audiences of any kind. This is pretty straightforward pop salsa, heavy on romantica, with Rivera’s more than serviceable voice (although Marc Anthony has nothing to worry about) accompanied by a topnotch orchestra and arrangements from some of the top names in the business. The album borrows its strategy from U.S. music marketers — it’s all about singles, from the title track to the current hit, the terrific “El Amor Nunca Pregunta,” to the bouncy “Yo Quisiera Ser El Condor,” every one of them hummable, danceable stick-in-your brain tunes. That it’s commercial isn’t a complaint — Rivera’s always been commercial. That it’s this commercial means if he doesn’t break through with this one, he probably never will.
