player ready...Park commissioners in New Lenox are expected to vote this month to issue a letter allowing for the possible construction of a Lake Michigan water pipeline on park property.
Mayor John Nowakowski and Village Administrator Russ Loebe told the New Lenox Park Board on Tuesday that routing the water pipe from Tinley Park to New Lenox along the edge of The Sanctuary Golf Course would save about $500,000 in construction costs.
The village needs the Park District’s letter by the end of the month as part of the qualifying process for a low-interest state loan to fund the project, Loebe said.
If the loan application is approved, the village stands to save between $2 million and $2.5 million in interest costs, the mayor said.
The pipeline construction is the latest step in the town’s move to switch its water source from local wells to a Lake Michigan supply.
But the Park District isn’t the only party concerned with use of golf course land, where Native American remains and artifacts were discovered during a pre-construction archaeological study.
Park Board President Tom Lewis said village officials should consult the local chapter of the American Indian Movement before planning any construction.
Loebe said the village is awaiting the results of an archeological study of the area earmarked for the pipeline. “We surely understand the sensitivity . . . the archaeological significance,” Loebe said.
Village officials will contact AIM, Nowakowski said.
