A Joliet physician told the New Lenox Village Board on Tuesday night about his plans to build a home for Alzheimer’s disease patients.

Dr. Richard Zalar wants village support for his venture, which calls for construction of a one-story building on landscaped grounds that would house about 100 patients suffering from the disease.

“I’m looking for moral support, not money,” Zalar said. He said the center would be a non-profit operation.

He said the uniqueness of his plan is to treat and house patients according to the stage of the disease. Zalar also is seeking statements of support from Joliet and from Will County.

The center, to be named for Zalar’s wife, Gertrude Zalar, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, would be built on the outskirts of Joliet.

Zalar had asked for village support earlier this year, but trustees said they wanted more information before taking a position.

Trustee Dave Batson said he thought New Lenox officials should wait to act after Joliet rendered a judgment because the site is closer to that municipality.
