Sheriff Gary Del Re returned to work Tuesday, less than three weeks after undergoing emergency quadruple bypass surgery.

Doctors said that Del Re’s condition had been corrected by the surgery and that his heart suffered no significant damage.

Del Re, 48, was hospitalized Feb. 20 after complaining of chest pains at work. He was transferred to Evanston Hospital after initial tests revealed blockages in several arteries. He was operated on the next day.

Del Re suffered a mild heart attack in October. His pains last week were not diagnosed as another heart attack but as symptoms of a condition that could have led to one.

In next Tuesday’s Republican primary, Del Re faces challenger Willie Smith, a former undersheriff who retired last fall.
