Taste of history: Some organizations celebrate anniversaries with one large cake. But when the North Shore chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women turned 50 recently, there were about 20 kinds of cookies, cakes, tortes and desserts. The birthday bash, a Jewish Heritage Desserts contest held at a member’s home in Highland Park, celebrated not just the organization but the passing down from generation to generation of ethnic recipes.
When the tasting by three local food mavens was done, the winners were Aunt Millie’s accordion treat, submitted by Doris Guthman, Lincolnwood, in the cookie category; Highland Parker Jane White’s blitz torte in the cake division; and Highland Parker Julia Gerstein’s chocolate bread pudding.
