The 12 members of the newly formed Mt. Prospect Youth Commission on Wednesday night voted unanimously to continue exploring the idea of a skateboard park in the village.

Youth commissioners will study local ordinances concerning skateboarding and traffic laws and discuss their findings at a March 25 meeting.

“I personally don’t skateboard, but we need to represent everyone in the community,” said Monica Maciasz, 18, Youth Commission chairwoman and a Prospect High School senior.

The move to consider a skateboard park stemmed in part from a memo sent to the commission by Mt. Prospect Police Chief Ronald Pavlock. The chief cited complaints by business owners and motorists about in-line skaters and skateboarders.

Maciasz said the four area park districts that serve Mt. Prospect could be asked to send representatives to a Youth Commission meeting in May to talk about a possible skateboard park at a park district facility.

The Mt. Prospect youth commissioners join their counterparts in Arlington Heights in looking to set up a skateboard park.
