The city will spend $1 million this year to spruce up the area near its downtown with new trees, sidewalks and lighting along several Elmhurst streets, City Council members said Monday night.
Aldermen agreed Monday to hire Martam Construction Inc. to install new curbs and gutters, brick sidewalks and ornamental lighting, plant honey locust trees and upgrade water service along the south side of Adelaide Street between Cottage Hill Avenue and York Street; along the north side of Adelaide from Adell Place to York; along Adell from Adelaide to Park Avenue; along Park from Adell to York; along the north side of 1st Street from Addison Avenue to York and along the west side of Addison from 3rd Street to a proposed alley just south of the new Market Square development.
The city had budgeted nearly $1.4 million for the project, but Martam officials indicated they could complete the project for $400,000 less, said Ald. Gerald Wolin, chairman of the City Council’s Public Works and Building Committee. With the surplus of $400,000, the city will be able to pay for decorative street lights, trees, garbage containers and a fountain near City Hall, Wolin said.
