Tinley Park officials voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve the first increase in water rates in the village since January 1992.
Officials said the 9 percent increase, which will amount to 20 cents per 1,000 gallons, is attributed to higher costs charged by Chicago during each of the last two years for supplying water. They also cited higher maintenance and operation charges imposed by Oak Lawn, through which the water supply comes.
Tinley Park households will average a $12 annual increase, according to Trustee Mike Bettenhausen. Residents now pay $2.14 per 1,000 gallons, while the new rate will be $2.34.
Officials have been aware for about two years that Tinley Park would need to raise its rate, he said. The increase will take effect April 1.
