Population growth in Mokena is likely to bring in an extra $200,000 to $250,000 in tax state revenue, said Village Administrator John Downs.

According to unofficial results of a special census conducted in the village last month, the population tops the predicted 12,300 total by 300, he said.
Special censuses enables fast-growing towns such as Mokena to claim a bigger share of state tax revenues from such sources as the motor fuel tax or income tax that are distributed to municipalities on the basis of population.
“This is a real plus for us,” Downs said.
The town’s population has increased 160 percent since 1990, Downs said.
