Parents in Mokena Elementary School District 159 will pay higher fees in the fall.

The school board voted Wednesday night to raise the yearly fees charged for kindergartners to $29 from $27. Fees charged for pupils in grades 1 through 8 will go up to $50 from $48 a year.

Assistant Supt. Pat Chesla said the fees do not cover the cost of textbooks and pay only part of the cost of other instructional materials, such as workbooks, science equipment and paper.

A survey of pupils fees in nearby schools shows Mokena’s are lower than those in neighboring school districts in Frankfort, New Lenox and Frankfort Square.

Another change in next year’s back-to-school bills will be the addition of a $15-a-year technology fee to help cover some of the costs incurred by running classroom computers in grades 1 through 8.
