Young can’t seem to shake that coughing, sniffling, stuffy-head thing. But it was Manley that wound up feeling sick Thursday.
Flu-stricken Quentin Richardson scored a school-record 46 points as the second-ranked Dolphins (17-1, 8-0) held off host Manley 89-80 in the Public Red West.
“Quentin is coming off the flu,” Young coach George Stanton said. “He missed a couple of practices, and I was thinking of not letting him play.”
It was lucky for Stanton that Richardson did play, because starters Dennis Gates and Marquis Wright were sidelined by illness.
“We had a lot of people missing today,” Richardson said. “That was the reason I had to pick up the scoring.”
Richardson launched four of his six three-pointers in the first quarter and pulled down 10 rebounds. Cordell Henry, Corey Harris and Kristopher Clemmons each chipped in 13 points.
Manley (4-11, 2-6) came as close as 79-76 with a little more than a minute left, but Young answered with a 10-4 run to pull away.
Mario Porter scored 22 points for Manley and Michael London added 19.
