Coach Tom Dineen’s strategy Tuesday was simple: concede that Palatine’s Karen Hagberg will at least reach her scoring average and make up the difference at the free-throw line.
Dineen’s 18th-ranked Buffalo Grove team had no trouble executing the plan. Led by Lindsey Hamma (19 points), Piper Mead (11) and Christy Compobasso (nine), the Bison hit 25 of 30 free throws in a 52-45 Mid-Suburban North victory over visiting Palatine. Buffalo Grove was clinging to a one-point lead late in the fourth quarter before Hamma, Mead and Compobasso collectively hit eight free throws to give the Bison (18-4, 6-0) a 52-43 lead.
Hagberg, who entered the game with a 19.9 scoring average, scored 26 and had nine rebounds, three steals and three blocks. She helped Palatine (12-10, 3-4) rally from a nine-point deficit in the fourth, scoring six points and stealing a pass during an 8-0 Palatine run.
“A great player like Hagberg is going to get her points,” Dineen said. “We worked to get them in foul trouble, and we got in the bonus.”
