Thornwood and Thornridge had been waiting more than a month to do battle in the SICA East. While most teams are preparing for the second of two meetings against conference opponents, Thornwood and Thornridge had yet to play even once because their Dec. 19 game had to be rescheduled for security reasons.
When the teams finally met Monday night at Thornridge, it was Thornwood that came out on top 36-33.
The Thunderbirds (13-4, 3-2) finished the game with a 9-0 run and held No. 17 Thornridge scoreless for the last 5 minutes. The Falcons (13-6, 4-1) still might have prevailed, however, if not for some last-second heroics by Thornwood’s Brett Love (14 points), who hit a three-pointer with 1.2 seconds left to give the Thunderbirds the upset.
“He (Love) is not afraid to take the shot at the end,” said Thornwood coach Keven Hayhurst.
