A sackful of success: For a tiny square object of minimal price, the traditional White Castle burger appears to inspire outsize passions.
Those unfamiliar with the fare of childhood afternoons and post-party teenage nights probably wouldn’t comprehend the unbridled joy of the hordes of slider-starved Chicago transplants who showed up for the grand opening of Mokena’s newest eatery–a White Castle resplendent with shiny ivory walls and electric blue neon.
Unlike the average, basic grand opening featuring a ribbon to be cut and a scattering of dignitaries, the debut of the Mokena White Castle in a converted Hardees at 191st Street and LaGrange Road attracted a major crowd.
“While we were there waiting for the ribbon cutting, there were people at both doors,” trustee John Mazzorana said.
“You almost got trampled,” recalled John Downs, village administrator.
That business may even be helpful to nearby establishments. In a pun that may or may not have been intended, trustee Ed Jancauskas said he expects to see the enterprises “feeding off each other.”
