The Village of Steger’s approach to parks and recreation programs with nearby South Chicago Heights already is paying off, according to Steger Recreation Board member Peggy Santori.
“It’s really been good for our basketball program,” said Santori, estimating that 60 South Chicago Heights residents are involved in the expanded program. “Last year, we had 16 boys and girls teams. This year, we’re up to 24.”
Her comments followed the unanimous approval Monday by South Chicago Heights trustees of the joint recreation agreement. Steger trustees approved the agreement Oct. 20, opening the door to South Chicago Heights residents’ participation in the sport.
Under the terms of the agreement, a South Chicago Heights resident sits on the Recreation Board, and a trustee from that village serves as a liaison. The $40 non-resident fee charged by Steger will be borne by Village of South Chicago Heights.
The recreation agreement is the latest joint effort between the two villages, which share a library, situated in Steger, and two school districts.
Santori expressed enthusiasm about the recreation agreement but acknowledged some details still need to be addressed.
“Now it’s just a matter of sitting down and working out if we need extra equipment because of the extra kids and if South Chicago Heights will help pay for that.”
