Writing a bad check in Steger to pay a village bill just got more expensive.

The Village Board voted Tuesday night to charge $25 for checks returned from the bank. Village President Lou Sherman said the $15 increase was intended to discourage residents from paying their water bills with bad checks.

Sherman said the frequency has been “often enough that it’s an annoyance.” He noted the previous charge was less than the penalty the village must pay to its bank for processing the checks.

The trustees also raised Steger’s permit charge for garbage haulers to $500 from $100 and the charge for food delivery trucks to $50 from $25.

The council delayed action on a proposed ordinance that would formally require reimbursement for streets constructed at the new senior housing complex.

The proposed ordinance calls on the Hinsdale-based Stough Group to reimburse the village $360,000 for constructing the streets at the complex on Steger’s south side. Attorneys told the village the proposed ordinance contained errors that needed to be fixed before approval.
