The Des Plaines City Council voted 7-0 Monday night to seek bids to repair a suspended city water main that officials say is “sagging.”
The water main in question runs beneath a Rand Road bridge that spans the Des Plaines River.
Brackets that support the 8-inch main have rusted through, and replacing them would be much less expensive than repairing the main if it were to break, Scott Shirley, public works director, said.
The Illinois Department of Transportation is scheduled to do other work to the bridge in May or June, but Shirley said he doesn’t want to wait until then to repair the main.
Should the line break, Shirley said, city water pressure could drop, leading to the city issuing a boil order.
