Dave Schmidt had waited for the moment he could lift York to victory with a game-winning shot, and the senior got his chance Saturday against Buffalo Grove with the score tied in the closing seconds.

Schmidt didn’t disappoint himself–or York for that matter–as he delivered the game-winning basket on a turnaround jumper as time expired to give York (8-8) a 49-47 victory over Buffalo Grove (11-6) in Elmhurst.

“I was a little nervous,” said Schmidt, who finished with 16 points and six rebounds. “I set my man up and just popped it. I want the ball in that situation. I’ve been looking forward to this all season.”

York went up 47-44 late in the fourth quarter on two free throws by Mark Thomas, but Buffalo Grove’s Dave DeVoss tied the game 47-47 on a three-pointer with 49 seconds left.

Lyons went on a 9-1 run with 1:25 left to seal the victory. The upset proved recuperative for Lyons coach David Ray after his team’s 75-54 West Suburban Silver loss Friday to Oak Park.

“I’ve been around a long time and I’m used to winning, but last night might have been the toughest loss in my 24 years, so it was emotional to come back with a win tonight,” Ray said.
