When legislators in Springfield began talking about dropping state requirements for front license plates to save money, police officers throughout the state began grumbling.

But in Westmont, police have begun an organized effort to lobby lawmakers to drop the idea, officials said.

“I can’t see anyone in law enforcement who would support dropping that front plate,” Westmont Police Lt. Timothy Ferris said late Thursday. “A lot of crimes, all kinds of crimes, are solved because someone catches a glimpse of a front plate.”

About 30 village officers have joined the Illinois License Plate Coalition and are urging others including civilians, to do so.

“The money saved by doing away with the front license plate will be a detriment to the public’s overall safety, and we hope people will contact their state legislators and tell them that,” Ferris said.
