East Maine District 63 is expected on Tuesday to approve a $10,700 contract with Commonwealth Edison Co. to upgrade service at Nelson Elementary School.

Nelson, at 8901 N. Ozanam Ave., is undergoing construction to add four new classrooms and a multipurpose room to accommodate a growing enrollment throughout the district, and the new rooms lack the necessary transformer and electrical service to power major equipment.

Edison has told officials that the simplest route to making the addition compatible with the rest of the building is to replace service to the entire school, according to James Reynolds, district director of operations and maintenance.

Separately, the district board is expected to approve an $88,000 payment to Pioneer Roofing Inc., Tuesday, the last in a series of payments totaling $304,000 to refurbish roofing on Melzer and Washington Schools.

The warranty on the product used in the roofing at all the district’s schools expired in the early 1990s, but the company agreed to a 10-year warranty extension provided the district refurbish the roofs.
